The haze we see in our city skyline is caused by tiny particulates suspended in the atmosphere. At high concentrations, these particulates scatter and absorb sunlight resulting in diminished horizontal visibility thereby giving the atmosphere a characteristic opalescent appearance. Haze is not confined to urban environments; it may also be observed in rural areas. On 14th March 2014, the haze has worsened in several parts of the country with Port Klang recording the highest Air Pollution Index (API) of 233, which is a very unhealthy level and Selangor Education Department has ordered all the 131 schools in the Klang district to close due to the haze.
